Perti’s La Beata Imelde Lambertini (1686)

Abstract
Giacomo Perti was only 24 years old when he composed La Beata Imelde. In the spring of 1685 he had been in Modena, fulfilling a commission from the duke for an oratorio on the life of Moses, and providing an opera, Oreste in Argo, for the carnival season. By January 1686 he was back in Bologna directing two of his operas in the Malvezzi Theatre: L’incoronazione di Dario on 13 January, and La Flavia on 16 February. In March he presented La Beata Imelde as a tribute to one of Bologna’s most distinguished families, the Lambertini (see Chapter 1). It was the first oratorio in the Bolognese repertory to honour a local saint. The venue for the performance is unknown, but it may have been the sixteenth-century Palazzo Lambertini on the strada San Stefano.
