Real and Mythopoetic Geographies

View through CrossRef
Linda Russo’s “Real and Mythopoetic Geographies” focuses on Kyger’s early work and her life in Japan with Snyder and poems written there that would appear in The Tapestry and the Web. Russo closely analyzes a 1963 poem from this volume, “fragmented. ie several valleys.,” connecting it to Kyger’s experience with Snyder as the couple travels beyond Kyoto. Russo’s essay explores the contexts of Kyger’s life in Japan, excluded as she was from the kind of traditional Zen practice Snyder as a man with a knowledge of Japanese could have. Russo presents Kyger as proto-feminist as she investigates her relation to place and time and the complicated dynamics of gender assumptions between Kyger and Snyder at this time through the frames of five fragments of one poem.
