Holanda and Chico Buarque de Holanda: interpreting the Brazilizn national identity’s formation

The author depicts the correlation between “The Roots of Brazil”, a сlassical work of the Brazilian historian and sociologist Sergio Buarque de Holanda, and “Spilt Milk”, a novel by Chico Buarque de Holanda, the famous scientist`s son and one of the most prominent and remarkable figures in the cultural life of the modern Brazil. The points the father dealt with in the middle of 1930s keep being a pressing problem nowadays and can be traced in his son`s work. We can see that Chico Buarque de Holanda seeks the answers to the same “Brazilian” questions. In particular, he is eager to understand if Brazil has managed to overcome its colonial legacy; if the Brazilian political elites have got the ability to separate the private interests from the public matters; and if the patriarchal society that had created the “cordial man” (the quintessence of the Brazilian identity) has vanished as the outcome of the modernization.
