Knowledge of self-care among heart failure patients at Vinmec Times City International Hospital In 2023
View through CrossRef
Background: The study aims to describe the knowledge of self-care among heart failure patients at Vinmec Times City International Hospital in 2023. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 246 diagnosed heart failure patients undergoing outpatient treatment at the Cardiology Department of Vinmec Times City International General Hospital from April 2023 to October 2023, using the Atlanta Heart Failure Knowledge Test (AHFKT – V2) to assess patients' knowledge of self-care. Results: The proportion of heart failure patients with adequate self-care knowledge was very low (19.5%), with basic knowledge about heart failure reaching 27.2%, knowledge about medication and adherence to treatment reaching 6.1%, knowledge about symptom control and self-care practice reaching 5.3%, and knowledge about nutrition reaching 5.7%. Patients with an education level of secondary vocational school or higher have better self-care knowledge compared to those with a basic education level (OR = 5.3; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The proportion of heart failure patients with knowledge of self-care during outpatient treatment at Vinmec Times City International Hospital is relatively low and there is a correlation between educational level and self-care practices among heart failure patients. It is essential to implement measures to enhance self-care knowledge among outpatient heart failure patients, such as health education interventions, monitoring, and timely support to supplement knowledge. Keywords: self-care; knowledge; heart failure.
