View through CrossRef
Objective: The objective of our study was to determine the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal in Joliot Curie Institute Aristide le Dantec Hospital. Methods: This is a descriptive retrospective study carried out for 15 years from January 1st, 2001 to December 31st, 2015.Results: 28 patients were hospitalized during the study period for squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal, of which 15 men (53.6%) and 13 women (46.4%), the sex ratio was in favor of men (1, 15). The average age was 52 ± 12.2. Rectorragies were the most common sign (71.4%), while the macroscopic budding appearance was most often found (53.6), stages III A and IV with 14.3% and 17.9%, respectively. radiotherapy in 23 cases, 11 patients were treated with chemotherapy, abdominoperineal amputation was performed in 10 patients, the outcome was favorable in 2 cases, one case of recurrence and 8 cases of metastases were noted, with approximately 12 months.. The average duration of follow-up of our patients was 11 months with a minimum of one month and a maximum of 48 months. Conclusion: The clinical latency of squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal and the lack of specificity of its clinical manifestations lead to a diagnosis often late. Its treatment is conservative in more than 75% of cases by external radiotherapy and interstitial brachytherapy. Keywords: squamous cell carcinoma, anal canal, surgery, radio chemotherapy
