Embauché au CNRS par Irène Joliot-Curie en 1946, Marc Lefort étudie l’action des rayonnements sur les solutions aqueuses jusqu’en 1957, date à laquelle il transfère toute son activité à l’Institut de physique nucléaire d’Orsay qui vient d’ouvrir. Il y créera un groupe de chimie nucléaire qui jouera un rôle essentiel pour le développement de la physique des ions lourds en France. Professeur de chimie à l’Université d’Orsay de 1963 à 1985, auteur de plusieurs ouvrages scientifiques, il a été responsable de la construction de l’accélérateur Alice à Orsay, puis du Ganil, à Caen.
