View through Europeana Collections
Summary: The drawing, a pen, is characteristic of the way of drawing, with this technique, of José de Hermosilla (1715-1776), architect and fundamental engineer in the Spanish architectural culture during the central years of the XVIII century (Sambricio 1986; Rodríguez Ruiz 1985 and 1992). Pended in Rome (1747-1751) by the Preparatory Board of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, on his return he played a very important role in the newly founded Academy of Madrid (1752). In 1754 the decision was made (Carrete Parrondo 1987) to create a significant number of ornamental and allegorical engravings that would serve to illustrate the publications of the Academy, especially the Distribution of the awards. For this task, drawings were commissioned to some professors such as Ventura Rodríguez, Antonio González Ruiz or José de Hermosilla himself, who made an abecedario placing the letters in landscapes, architectures and ruins of strong Roman flavor, not in balde had recently returned from that city. The drawings, recorded by Juan Bernabé Palomino and Tomás Francisco Prieto, among others, were published for the first time in 1755, in the Distribution of the prizes corresponding to the previous year. This ornamental drawing, with instruments of architecture, a book, a roll possibly containing drawings, keys, a palm and a terrestrial sphere, is very possible to do it Hermosilla attending to the mentioned context, perhaps as a page culmination. Undoubtedly it is drawn with the intention of being recorded. DR
