are Western words. In traditional Chinese writings, there is no word exactly similar to psychology. Among various classical schools of thought and philosophies, Taoism was developed by Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu in 500

. Their writings laid the foundation of later developments in Taoism as well as the Tao religion in the Hang and Sung Dynasty. This entry briefly introduces the historical background and major concepts of Taoism, and then discusses Taoism in the context of cross‐cultural psychology.
