Behavioral Genetics and the Etiology of Alcoholism

View through CrossRef
Abstract The overarching aim of behavioral genetic research is to explain phenotypic variation in behavior with respect to genotypic and environmental variation in the population. This research strategy provides a framework for understanding the etiology of alcoholism insofar as the alcoholism phenotype can be characterized in quantifiable behavioral terms such as amount, frequency, and pattern of drinking. Furthermore, the expression of behavioral traits has been shown to contribute to the variability of the risk for alcoholism. A significant proportion of the phenotypic variance in these traits can be explained by genotypic variation.
