Le Cordial franco-ibérique se forme vers 5400 cal. ВС аu contact des groupes culturels du Néolithique ancien de l'aire liguro-tyrrhénienne. Au même moment apparaît dans l'arrière pays méditerranéen une céramique décorée de cannelures et de coups de poinçon interprétée comme représentant une phase tardive du Cardial franco-ibérique et regroupée sous le nom d'Epi-cardial. Cependant, un certain nombre d'arguments d'ordre typologique, chorologique et chronologique vont à l'encontre de ce modèle évolutif.
