Literary Geography

The term “literary geography” is used to refer to an interdisciplinary subfield within human geography that takes a geographical approach to literary materials. A closely related field known as “critical literary geography” also exists within literary studies. In recent years, the geographical strand of literary geography has become more actively interdisciplinary in its engagement with literary studies and literary theory. It has as a result become more difficult to distinguish between literary geography as a subfield of human geography and work grounded in other disciplines that is also practiced at the intersection of literary studies, geography, and spatial theory. An important recent development in the field has been the establishment of an online bibliography for work in geography and literary studies, and the subsequent launch of the interdisciplinary journal Literary Geographies .
