View through Europeana Collections
Cardboard with sewn-on sample beads numbers 794 - 910. They are mostly filigree beads, made of transparent glass. Bead 893 is an aventurine bead.ManufactureFantasy beads belong to the group of wound beads, the so-called lamp made beads. These beads are made by hand. Glass is wound around a knitting needle. The knitting needle is rolled between thumb and forefinger, so that the bead gets a nice round shape. Then the glass is decorated with coloured rods. If the bead is still liquid, the decoration melts into it, otherwise it solidifies halfway up the bead. The beads can be moulded into different shapes when the glass mass has not yet become completely solid.
