Davorin Jenko in Social Memory

View through CrossRef
*** Davorin Jenko (1835–1914), composer and conductor, “man of two homelands”, Slovenian by birth and Panslovenian by orientation, lived and worked in Panchevo and Belgrade for about forty years of his life. He left a significant legacy in Serbia as well as in Slovenia. This article deals with the question of social memories of Davorin Jenko and his work by following through time the ways in which Jenko was remembered, and the discourses associated with his name and work in Serbia and Slovenia. The main assumption of the paper is that the ways in which social memory is constructed and maintained, although they are indeed also very important in understanding Jenko’s life and opera, speak even more about the societies in which these processes evolve.
