Der Band entschlüsselt erstmals die „Religionsbilder“ des italienischen Malers Alessandro Magnasco (1667–1749) vom Übergang des Spätbarock zum Rokoko als bildhafte Argumente des Religionsdiskurses. Die Gemälde widmeten sich der Darstellung religiöser Praktiken so unterschiedlicher Glaubensgemeinschaften wie der Juden, Christen – darunter auch Quäker – aber auch der Paganen und dem volkstümlichen Aberglauben.
Unter den Aspekten von Ikonographie, Pendantbildung und zeitgenössischer Rezeption untersucht Charlotte Mende, wieso bestimmte religiöse Riten Bildwürdigkeit erlangten. Welche Inspirationsquellen bedingten Magnascos eigenwillige Bilderfindungen und wie gingen die damaligen Sammler damit um?
