Abstract
Joseph Murphy’s 1879 claims that Stephen C. Foster did not compose many of his songs, including “Old Folks at Home,” inspired this interview in Pittsburgh with the mother and daughter of Charles Shiras. Charles Shiras was friends with Stephen Foster and had written one song with him. Joan Sloan Shiras and Rebecca Shiras Morris claim that Shiras wrote the words to “Old Folks at Home” and other Foster songs without attribution. These claims are demonstrably false, however, because the songs were drafted in Stephen Foster’s handwriting in his sketchbook.
