In 1959, Daniel K. Inouye became the first Congressman elected to the United States House of Representatives from the State of Hawaii. He arrived at that post after five years of service in the government of the Territory. In 1962 he was elected to the United States Senate, a position he still holds. He has been an active, productive Senator; having served on many committees. He is currently Chairman, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Senator Inouye chose a career in law and politics after the loss of his right arm in World War II prevented fulfillment of his lifelong goal to become a surgeon.
