Rabbi Loew in Legend

View through CrossRef
This chapter discusses the legends surrounding the “exalted” Judah Loew, called the “Maharal,” rabbi of Prague. In the synagogue of Prague, Rabbi Loew's chair still stands. Though great scholars and mystics have been rabbis in Prague, none has presumed to sit upon that chair. His presence is too keenly felt; the legends about him remain too potent. The many legends about Judah Loew are variations upon a single motif: his alleged magical abilities. The legends coalesce around two themes: (1) Judah Loew and the Emperor Rudolf II, and (2) the Maharal and the golem. The legends of Rudolf and Loew are the embellishment of history by legend, while the legends of the golem represent an attempt to root legend in historical fact. Eclipsed by the legends about him, his life and his thought remain enshrined in the tomes he composed. This book reveals the secrets of his life and delineates the content of his teachings.
