The Revolution of 3 September 1843, as depicted by a popular artist, perhaps N. Grigoriadis. The picture shows the palace surrounded by the army, the cavalry, veterans of the 1821 uprising, and the people of Athens. Dimitrios Kallergis played a leading role in this bloodless coup as, with the moral support of the aged general Makriyannis (1797-1864) and the aid of the army, he blockaded the palace and forced the king to sign the proposal of the Council of State, thus providing for a Constitution, a change of government and the convocation of a National Assembly.
