Cadmium

Cadmium wurde 1817 entdeckt. In elementarer Form ist es ein silberweiß glänzendes, relativ weiches und plastisches Schwermetall. Cd fällt als Nebenprodukt der Zn‐Gewinnung an. Es wird zur Herstellung von Batterien (35 %), als Korrosionsschutz für Eisen und andere Metalle (20 ‐ 30 %), als Cd‐Legierungen (5 %) sowie in Form von Cd‐Pigmenten und Cd‐Seifen als PVC‐Stabilisatoren verwendet. In der Kerntechnik dient Cd als Brems‐ und Regelstab. In Böden gelangt es auch über Phosphor‐Düngung. Wegen der hohen Toxizität von Cadmium ist dessen wirtschaftliche Bedeutung abnehmend. Seit Dezember 2011 ist es in Schmuck, Legierungen zum Löten und in PVC in der Europäischen Union verboten, eine Überwachung des Gehaltes in der Umwelt ist zwingend nötig.
