Bishop Leo III (795–816) endowed the papal oratory of St. Lawrence, within the Lateran palace complex, with a chest of cypress wood filled with sacred objects. As it turned out, the wooden container, recalling the Ark of the Covenant, became the foundation for an expanding pontifical collection of relics and liturgical implements. The oratory, in consequence, was known from the Middle Ages onward as the Palatine Chapel of Sancta Sanctorum....
