Abstract
Part I of Concealing Caste: Passing and Personhood in Dalit Literature contains short stories by Dalit authors addressing the theme of hidden identity. The ninth of these is Omprakash Valmiki’s ‘Sandstorm’ (Andhar), translated from Hindi by Joel Lee. ‘Sandstorm’ appeared in Valmiki’s first short story collection, Salaam, published in 2000. It portrays a prosperous middle-class couple who have severed ties with family and community and raised children who do not know their caste. News that a beloved uncle has died compels the family to contend with its secret.
