After an early dalliance with the movie industry, Ellington made only four scores for movie soundtracks in the era of the Hollywood studio system. The latter two, Change of Heart and Assault on a Queen, were unsuccessful movies though Ellington’s scores, apart from studio interference, were interesting. The first two, Anatomy of a Murder and Paris Blues, were successful movies and Ellington’s scores earned nominations for an Academy Award and a Grammy. Ellington’s scores comprised “accidental suites,” providing ingenious variations on memorable themes.
