OFF‐FARM EMPLOYMENT AND SOCIAL NETWORKS OF LOUISIANA FARM COUPLES*

AbstractThe growing reliance on off‐farm employment in industrialized societies has become a topic of considerable research interest. Although attention has been paid to the impact of multiple job holding on the economic well‐being and the internal organization of farm families, there is a lack of discussion on how this may affect external social relations among these families. Examining farm couples in Louisiana, this paper treats their work‐role statuses as an interface between the worlds of agricultural production and the larger economy and as an intrusion into traditional patterns of external social relationships (i.e., social networks) of the farm family. While off‐farm employment, especially in white collar occupations, reduces the proportion of farmers found in social networks, over all, it has litde impact on the structure or composition of these networks. Of greater significance, the farm background of the husband is strongly associated with traditional forms of external social relationships. Patterns of social interaction established earlier in life appear to reproduce themselves across generations of farm families. Implications of these findings for the structure of agriculture are discussed.RésuméLe développement de ľ emploi extra‐agricole dans les sociétés industrialisées est devenu un thème ? un intérét scientifique croissant. Si on a bien prêté attention à son impact sur le bien‐être économique et sur ľorganisation interne des families agricoles, on a relativement peu étudié ses effets sur les relations sociales externes de ces families. Etudiant des couples agricoles en Louisiane, cet article considère les statuts liés au travail comme un interface entre ľ univers économique et le monde de la production agricole ? une pan, et comme une rupture dans les modèles de relations sociales (les réseaux ? interactions) traditionnels ? autre part. Ľ emploi extra‐agricole, surtout si c'est un emploi non manuel, atténue la proportion ? agriculteurs dans les réseaux, mais il en modifie peu la composition et la structure. De plus, le passé agricole du mari semble très nettement lié au maintien de formes traditionnelles de relations sociales. Il s'ensuit que les modèles ? interaction sociale intériorisés semblent bien se reproduire ? eux‐mêmes de génération en génération. La conclusion dégage de ces constats certaines implications quant à la structure de ľ agriculture.KurzfassungDie Zunahme der außerlandwirtschafdichen Erwerbstätigkeit in industrialisierten Gesellschaften ist Gegenstand beträchtlichen wissenschaftlichen Interesses geworden. Beachrung hat vor allem die Bedeutung der Mehrfachbeschäftigung für die ökonomische Situation und innere Organisation landwirtschafdicher Familien gefunden, doch fehlt eine Diskussion über deren Wirkungen auf die externen sozialen Beziehungen dieser Familien. Durch Untersuchungen bei landwirtschaftlichen Ehepaaren in Louisiana werden in dem Beitrag die Arbeitsrollen‐Status als eine Verbindung zwischen landwirtschaflicher Produktion und der übrigen Wirtschaft und als eine Erweiterung traditioneller Muster externer sozialer Beziehungen (z.B. soziale Netzwerke) der landwirtschaflichen Familien behandelt. Während mit auβerbetrieblicher Erwerbstätigkeit, insbesondere höher qualifizierten Tatigkeiten, der Anteil von sozialen Netzwerken angehörenden Landwirten generell abnimmt, hat dies doch wenig Bedeutung für die Struktur oder Zusammenseczung dieser Netzwerke. Von größerer Bedeutung ist, daß der landwirtschaftliche Hintergrund des Ehemannes eng mit traditionellen Formen externer sozialer Beziehungen verbunden ist. Soziale Interaktionsmuster, die früher im Leben entwickelt wurden, scheinen sich selbst über Generationen zu reproduzieren. Die Bedeutung dieser Ergebnisse für die Struktur der Landwirtschaft wird diskutiert.
