Inclusiveness and Islandness on a Canadian Island

This chapter delves into the intersection between inclusiveness in education and islandness in a Canadian island. The author uses her experience as a researcher and historian to illustrate the evolution of an island school system over time as the policies of inclusion in schools was enacted. This case study island is compared to other islands worldwide to discuss its uniqueness and shared values with other island systems. A theoretical framework of Bourdieu is used to describe the workings of identity, power and practice. The chapter gives an in-depth understanding of one island's experience, through the eyes of a researcher and educator. Suggestions are made for further contextualization and comparison to global trends and experiences of islandness and inclusion.
