The Burden of Expectation: Where are the Women in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe Films?

Develops afeminist critique of Small Axe. Argues that, although the series offers important insights into the lived experiences of Black Britons, in the process of constructing it around Black male protagonists McQueen risks reinforcing traditional, patriarchal and racist conceptions. Concludes that, while Black women are seen in multiple roles across the Small Axe films, the emphasis is on them as carers, nurturers, and sexual beings.
