The Slave Narrative and Filmic Aesthetics: Steve McQueen, Solomon Northup and Colonial Violence

Tracks changes made in the film adaptation of Solomon Northup’s 1853 narrative 12 Years a Slave. These include the omission of Northup’s detailed descriptions of the production of sugar and cotton, and his accounts of Black agency and rebellion. The chapter also considers the impacts of the film’s strikingly beautiful imagery of Louisiana.
