“And Then I Met Lucy”: Perfection, Same-sex Desire, and Social Control in Mary Harron’s The Moth Diaries

View through CrossRef
Chapter Five, by Caroline Speller, discusses The Moth Diaries, highlighting key themes that have appeared throughout Harron’s career, such as notions of surveillance, censorship, and social control. Speller also reflects on the depiction of repressed female sexuality found in I Shot Andy Warhol and The Notorious Bettie Page that continues in The Moth Diaries. Speller utilizes Michel Foucault’s “Panopticism” to explore the film’s use of surveillance and punishment within the context of the girls’ boarding school. Speller also argues the film is somewhat a departure in style for Harron, particularly its use of the supernatural.
