10 – Glassware from Kota Cina

View through CrossRef
The Kota Cina 2011–2016 excavations yielded a little more than 1,000 shards of glassware in eight of the nine sectors. However, the mean density per cubic metre reveals an uneven distribution. Body shards are by far the most numerous, accounting for three quarters of the total, while undecorated free-blown glassware is vastly predominant (92% of the whole corpus). Among the 75 decorated shards, the most numerous (48%) are wheel-cut or engraved shards, followed by moulded and two-coloured shards. Colourless shards slightly supersede green shards. A fourth element used to characterise the corpus of Kota Cina is the shard thickness. More than 1,300 measurements have been taken, with thickness fluctuating between less than 1 mm and 14 mm. The existence of twelve shapes is suggested, including bowls, beakers (or goblets), bottles, jarlets, flasks and one oil lamp. Other wares include notably three bangle fragments and 292 beads.
