Dr. Polgár Sándor Győr megye legjelentősebb botanikusa volt. Munkásságának kiemelkedőbb eredményeit a florisztika, növényföldrajz, taxonómia, valamint az adventív flóra kutatása területén érte el. 1941-ben megjelent életműve, a Győrmegye flórája korának egyik legmodernebb monográfiája volt, amely napjainkban is sokat idézett alapmű. Felismerte és leírta hazánk egyik legritkább sárma-faját, az Ornithogalum ×degenianum-ot. Intenzív herbáriumi gyűjtő tevékenységet folytatott, gyűjtött lapjainak száma több, mint húszezer. Győri főreáliskolai tanárként 35 éven át tanított, ahol gyakorlatias módszereivel, tárgyszeretetével generációkban formálta ki a természet iránt érzett felelősséget.
