Sistrum, rhythm instruments used in Ethiopian church music. The instrument is similar to a shell made of a metal jumper, probably brass, and a wooden handle. On two transverse bars there are small round metal plates that create a rattlesnake when the instrument is shaken. The local name for sistrum is “tsenatsel.” The instrument was already present in ancient Egypt and was used in the old Jewish cult held in the Temple of Jerusalem. See also 1907.42.10.
