Earring
View through Europeana Collections
These jewels are in the form of a bow, the ends of which are thickened and decorated. This type of ear jewelry is common in the Majaphit period (1292-1530). The decoration often consists of a demon, monster or other head of a supernatural being; or also the head of a strong animal, such as a ram or an elephant. The intention was probably that the heads would scare off evil spirits and protect the wearer of the jewelry. Here the ends are decorated with an insect with a blunt snout and large bulging eyes. It is likely that this creature also frightened off evil spirits. A ruby is attached to its back with four pins. It does not represent an existing insect but a fantasy insect. This type of jewellery was probably hung in the hole in the elongated earlobe with the monster's head, in this case the insect, facing forwards.
