I was born at Eatonville, Florida (the first incorporated Negro town in America). My father, the Rev. John Hurston, was a Baptist preacher and carpenter. My mother, Lucy Hurston, sewed for the community. They both came from Alabama and had been in Eatonville three years when I was born.
