Adonis: Writing Where the World Begins and Begins Again

Chapter 3 traces trace Adonis’s ventures in the prose poem from his early experimentations in the collection Awrāq fī al-Rīḥ (Leaves in the Wind, 1958) to his seminal contribution, his book-long poem Mufrad bi s̩īghat al-jamʿ (Singular in Plural Form, 1977) passing through the major poetic stations in his career including Aghānī Mihyār al-Dimashqī (The Songs of Mihyar the Damascene, 1961). This chapter also traces a parallel thread of discovery through translation and anthologizing which informed and expanded Adonis’s vision of the prose poem as a framework for re-reading and creating. From Aghānī to Mufrad, Adonis gradually traces, not the disintegration of poetic form from verse into prose, but rather charts the emergence of poetic composition (kitāba) and arrives at form as a consequence of language, away from the binary of verse and prose.
