Abstract You might suppose that in summarizing what is known about orientation and navigation in pigeons we would be forced to rely on information from studies of domestic homing pigeons. But, you would be right only up to a point. Beyond that point, the uncanny truth about orientation and navigation of pigeons is that not only are feral pigeons reasonably good at it (Edrich and Keeton 1977) but wild Rock Pigeons have just about the same abilities (Visalberghi et al. 1978). As we have noted elsewhere in this volume for other aspects of biology, the differences between wild and feral pigeons and homing pigeons in orientation and navigation are largely ones of degree.
