David Crockett avait des origines huguenotes : l’assertion s’est imposée dans la doxa historique à partir des années 1920. Le célèbre héros du Sud des États-Unis serait le descendant d’un protestant du Languedoc persécuté par Louis XIV, nommé Crocketagne. Mais cette généalogie a été fabriquée. En s’appropriant la figure légendaire de Crockett, les sociétés huguenotes des États-Unis souhaitaient glorifier l’héritage culturel huguenot comme partie intégrante du récit de la nation américaine, ici décliné à travers tous ses mythes fondateurs : l’exil, le Refuge, la Frontière.
