Analyzing the negative effects of the demarcation of Rwanda’s frontiers by colonial powers on Kinyarwanda-speaking Congolese in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
View through CrossRef
This research examines the lasting effects of colonial-era policies on Kinyarwanda-speakingCongolese, focusing on their experiences with discrimination, land ownership challenges, limited access to education and employment, and political marginalization. Through a survey interview of individuals from various professions and regions across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including farmers, teachers, business owners, and community leaders, the study provides firsthand accounts of the systemic exclusion faced by this community. The findings underscore how colonial divisions continue to influence critical areas such as land acquisition, educational opportunities, employment, and political participation, perpetuating socio-economic inequality. Respondentshighlighted how colonial land policies have resulted in persistent land insecurity, hindering economic mobility and contributing to poverty. Furthermore, many participants noted financial constraints and limited educational access, which impede upward mobility and perpetuate socioeconomic disparities. Employment discrimination and political exclusion also remain prevalent, despite the community’s long-standing presence in the region. The study calls for urgent government recognition, legal protection, and policy reforms to ensure equal rights and opportunities for Kinyarwanda-speaking Congolese. It also emphasizes the need for internationaladvocacy to address these historical injustices. Ultimately, this research advocates for long-term solutions to promote social justice, inclusivity, and unity, ensuring that all Congolese citizens, regardless of ethnic background, have equal opportunities to thrive.
