Historical Memory of the Great Patriotic War in the Republic of Kazakhstan: Modern Trends

In the work based on the materials of ethnographic expeditions of 2023-2024 to the Republic of Kazakhstan, the main trends in preserving the memory of the Great Patriotic War were identified. Victory Day is an important holiday for Kazakhstanis, on this day official events are necessarily held. At the same time, in the museum and educational space, along with the concept of “Great Patriotic War”, “World War II” is often used, ethnicization is characteristic (combatants, partisans, home front workers are Kazakhs). In the public space, a modern symbol of Victory is fixed - a blue ribbon with an image of an ornament and the Order of the Patriotic War, which borders most of the monuments, there is also a St. George ribbon. Many memorial sites are a complex connecting monuments in honor of Victory, Afghan soldiers, victims of repression. An important element of the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War is the theme of the deportation of peoples.
