AbstractThe most important Dacian religious center and royal residence,Sarmizegetusa Regiawas the location of the final resistance of the last Dacian king, Decebalus, to Roman conquest (Ptol. 3.8.9: Zαρμιζεγέθουσα βασίλειον; Cass. Dio 68.9.7: Zερμιζεγεθούση; 67.10; 68.8.3.1; Exc. UG 47.7: τὰ βασίλεια Δακῶών). Probably constructed towards the middle of the first centuryBCE, its religious (and perhaps industrial) importance is likely to have predated its political significance as a royal capital.
