Outer sash of a Japanese bridal kimono, which is worn after the religious rite. It is made of ivory-coloured ribbed silk fabric, very long and wide. The lining is needle-embroidered in needlepoint, grained on the front and back. The motifs are flowers and leaves, as well as braided ribbons finished with a tassel, and open fans, clouds, flowers and geometric elements. The main decorative theme is the scroll of happiness or luck, as well as representations of yin and yang. \The wedding dress is made of several overlapping kimonos. The exterior is decorated with clouds, water, fans, laces, lucky scrolls, phoenixes, and flowers and leaves of various kinds. The damask of the silk fabric itself has been combined with metallic thread embroidery, gouache painting and traditional Japanese 'shibori' dyeing. To adjust the kimono, a sash (obi) is used, over which a cord is tied. A cloth sash is also worn under the obi; the one on this kimono is a 'shigoki', a special type of sash with red tones.
