Lourdes Bound

View through CrossRef
For many Catholics, the year 1958 was made special by the centennial anniversary of the Lourdes, France miracle: a series of visits to a local peasant girl by the Virgin Mary, culminating in the appearance of a spring on the spot where the apparitions took place. When affluent and Catholic relative Katie Semmes became convinced that a trip to Lourdes would help O’Connor’s failing health, she saw to it that O’Connor (accompanied by her mother, Regina Cline O’Connor) crossed the Atlantic to bathe in the supposedly curative waters. The O’Connors left Georgia in April 1958 with a local pilgrimage group whose first stop was an overnight stay in New York. This chapter gives details from their brief time in town, during which O’Connor visited her agent, Elizabeth McKee, and her new publishers, Farrar, Straus & Cudahy. She and her mother also spent time with Margaret Sutton, Lydia A. Bancroft, and Caroline Gordon. This trip would prove to be O’Connor’s last visit to New York.
