Jean-Baptiste-Louis Ma es werd geboren te Gent, op 30 september 1794, als zoon van de schilder Petrus Franciscus Maes (1753-1815). Hij genoot onderricht van zijn vader, van de beeldhouwer Jozef Inghels, en was gedurende enige tijd leerling aan de Gentse Academie voor Schone Kunsten.
