View through CrossRef
AbstractValerius Flaccus was a Flavian poet who wrote theArgonautica, an unfinished epic about Jason and the Golden Fleece. Almost nothing is known about his life, but his poem offers a Roman take on the myth, which is most famously narrated in Apollonius of Rhodes’ Hellenistic epic. It establishes the Argonauts as ushering in an Iron Age that will simultaneously bring technological progress and moral decline.
