Girl Portrait
View through Europeana Collections
A young girl is sitting in an armchair. In one of her hands, she has a book, on
which cover we can see the title: VIE. Her arms rest on the armrests of the chair. Her body, but also her
hands indicate an oblique position of the armchair indoors, although its back remains straight. Her face,
hair and clothes are strongly geometrized, emphasising contour and detail lines. A monkey is playing with
the girl’s hair, behind the armchair. Shapes from within the room are brought from the background and
simultaneously outlined. Faded dominant colour range - grey, ochre, brown, black, illuminated with yellow,
white and red. In terms of style, the work could be considered cubist and constructivist.
