Les différentes traductions grecques du terme pontifex sont examinées à partir d'un vaste corpus littéraire et épigraphique. Au-delà de l'aspect linguistique, cette étude permet également d'envisager la manière dont les auteurs hellénophones percevaient ce sacerdoce. Les traductions grecques de pontifex expriment d'une part la primauté et le prestige de cette fonction (pontife - grand-prêtre), d'autre part son contenu (pontife, responsable des sacra, enseignant les choses sacrées, hiérophante).
