Industry played a heavy role in shaping Baltimore demographically and physically and this chapter details the various industries that came to structure the landscape of the city, from the placement of railroads and roads to the formation of ethnic neighborhoods and divisions of class and race on the landscape. The chapter details the archaeological study of some of these early and nineteenth businesses from glass and pottery factories to breweries and sugar refineries.
