George and the Dinosaurs

View through CrossRef
George Lucas's work on The Land Before Time and Jurassic Park has been overlooked, in part because he directed neither feature and in part because his other works demand greater attention. However, Lucas's foray into the land of dinosaurs proves important for one to better understand his unique talent. Lucas in these dinosaur stories embraces the past, still using the state-of-the-art technologies with which he is associated. With The Land Before Time, the filmmaker produced for a new audience, the youngest of film viewers not yet ready for the tales of Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Also, Lucas brought to the dinosaur narratives his own mythology, cultural ideology, and cinematic sensibility. Understanding Lucas's contributions to The Land Before Time and Jurassic Park sheds light on the development of these two popular films, as well as to Lucas's mindset and vision at this stage in his career.
