Xenophobia

View through CrossRef
Xenophobia is typically defined as a “fear of strangers,” from Greek xenos , meaning “stranger” and “guest,” and phobos , meaning “fear.” The term came into contemporary currency in the mid‐1980s when the European Parliament inquiry into racism defined it as a concerning phenomenon. Islamophobia is commonly associated with xenophobia and typically defined as the “fear of Islam.” The concept was first outlined in its contemporary usage in the 1997 Runnymede Trust report (UK) and has come into increasing use in the post‐9/11 context, particularly in Europe. The term is plagued by conceptual weaknesses and may be better understood as an advocacy concept.
