Porträt Gabriel Vincent Thevenard (1669-1741)

View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Gabriel Vincent Thevenard. The French baritone is shown here as a frontal chest. He turned his head to the left, and he looks past the viewer. His mouth, which is slightly open, suggests that he is singing. He wears a shirt with a cape over his right shoulder and a sprung hat on his head, with short hair underneath. The effigy is oval and rests on a ledge that shows his work and his date of birth on his front. Gabriel Vincent Thevenard came to Paris around 1690 and studied with André Cardinal Destouches (1672-1749). He then became a member of the Académie Royale de Musique. From 1697 he played his first roles until 1730 he retired to private life. The present leaf was made as a copper engraving by the German engraver Georg Friedrich Schmidt (1712-1775) after a template by the Paris painting painter Charles-Étienne Geuslin (1685-1765). One realizes that under the motif there must still have been a publisher’s address, which was deleted. According to the art collections of the Veste Coburg, which also have a specimen of the leaf, the following line was written there: "AParis chez Odieuvre, M.d d “Estampes, quay de l” Ecole a vis la Samaritaine, ala belle Image. C. P.“This refers to the Parisian painter and publisher Michel Odieuvre (1687-1756), who published the paper in the portrait collection of 1777” L “Europe illustre, contenant l” histoire abregée des souverains, the princes (...) et des dames célèbres en Europe "by Jean François Dreux du Radier (1714-1780).
