View through CrossRef
In 1921, Joseph White Musser was excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for continuing the practice of polygamy after the First and Second Manifestos, the official Church statements that sought to end the practice. A year later, he became involved with a group of Mormons who shared his sympathetic position toward the controversial practice. In the years that followed, Musser became a leader in the emerging movement known as Mormon fundamentalism. His life and written work represent the many people who sought an authentic Mormonism in reaction against increased modernization. His legacy is most apparent in the Apostolic United Brethren, the largest and most televised Mormon fundamentalist religion.
