The role of bacterial endotoxin in pathogenesis of preeclampsia
View through CrossRef
Preeclampsia (PE) is a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite a great number of studies,
pathogenesis of PE is underinvestigated. However, according to recent data, insufficient remodeling of spiral arteries, oxidative stress, maternal
vascular endothelial dysfunction and systemic inflammation are of the greatest importance in PE pathogenesis. Previously, it was believed that
abnormal placentation plays an exceptional role in pathogenesis of PE, but now the fact is challenged by many authors. The transcriptomic
studies showed that a significant number of genes regulating completely different processes (e.g., blood pressure, apoptosis, fetal growth
and development, hormone secretion, metabolism, homeostasis and cellular transmission) are involved in PE development. Moreover, a
relationship was found between PE and insulin resistance. Thus, it is more correct to consider PE as a multisystem disease associated with
state of a macroorganism. The paper highlights a role of a lipopolysaccharide of gram-negative microorganisms in pathogenesis of PE.
